Malawi People - Ethnic Group

Malawi is a landlocked country located in southern Africa. It occupies a thin, twisting strip of land along the East African Rift Valley and is endowed with stunning hills and huge lakes. Lake Nyasa, also known as Lake Malawi in Malawi, covers more than one-fifth of the country’s total area.

The majority of Malawians work in cash crops and subsistence agriculture. The country’s exports include both tiny landholdings and huge tea and tobacco farms. Malawi has received considerable amounts of foreign capital in the form of development aid, which has tremendously aided in the exploitation of its natural resources and has enabled Malawi to produce a food surplus at times.

Three-quarters of the population is Christian, with the majority belonging to independent Christian or Protestant faiths and the remaining Roman Catholic. Muslims account for roughly one-fifth of the population. A small percentage of the population adheres to traditional beliefs.

Malawi Languages

The Chewa, Nyanja, Lomwe, Yao, Tumbuka, Sena, Tonga, Ngoni, Ngonde, and Lambya/Nyiha are the ten primary ethnic groups traditionally associated with modern Malawi. Bantu languages are spoken in all of Africa. Chewa was the single national language from 1968 to 1994; it is now one of many languages used in print and broadcast media and is spoken by the majority of the population. In 1996, government policy stated that education in grades 1-4 would be provided in the students’ mother tongue or vernacular language; beginning in grade 5, the medium of instruction would be English, which, despite being understood by less than one-fifth of the population when the country gained independence in 1964, continues to be widely used in business, administrative and judicial matters, higher education, and other areas.

Malawi Trade

Agriculture is the backbone of the Malawian economy, employing more than four-fifths of the working population and accounting for roughly one-third of GDP and the great bulk of export earnings in the 2000s. Tobacco, the most important export product, makes for a large percentage of the country’s trade income; tea, sugar, and cotton, all of which are grown mostly in the estate sector, are also important.

The Reserve Bank of Malawi is the country’s central bank; it issues the Malawian kwacha and advises the government on monetary policy. There are also a number of commercial banks, the most of which are based in Blantyre. The country has various insurance businesses, the largest of which, NICO Holdings Limited (previously the National Insurance Company), was privatised in 1996.

The Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE), founded in 1994 with assistance from the IMF, World Bank, and a development bank affiliated with the Dutch government, opened its doors to trading in 1996. The MSE, which is a member of the African Securities Exchange Association, has a diversified supervising committee that includes government and central bank members.
