Liberia is a country on the west African coast. The landscape of Liberia varies from flat and sandy coastal lowlands to undulating hills and dissected plateau further interior. The country is home to a lush rainforest with a diverse range of flora and wildlife. Liberia is Africa’s oldest nation and the only Black state that has never been colonised. It was formed on property obtained for freed slaves in the United States by the American Colonisation Society, which established a colony at Cape Mesurado in 1821. The territory was named Liberia in 1824.

Liberia was the first African republic to declare independence, and it is the continent’s first and oldest modern republic. It was one of two African countries, along with Ethiopia, to retain sovereignty during the Scramble for Africa. During World War II, Liberia backed the United States’ war effort against Germany, and as a result, the country received significant American investment in infrastructure, which aided its riches and development. Liberia was a founder member of the League of Nations, the United Nations, and the Organisation of African Unity, and President William Tubman pushed economic and political improvements that increased the country’s wealth and international image.
