This Gold Standard project, mostly in Uganda, Malawi, Rwanda, and Eritrea, repairs and drills new boreholes to supply safe drinking water to small rural communities. Boreholes can be converted into water wells by incorporating a vertical pipe casing and well screen, allowing water to be drawn from the ground even during dry seasons.
Communities no longer need to boil water to purify it because pure water is available. This decreases strain on local woods, which are the primary supply of firewood, as well as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Sustainable Development Goals: In addition to helping to take immediate action to mitigate climate change (SDG 13), the project provides a variety of other sustainable development benefits. The SDG impacts listed below are currently suggestive and subject to change based on further analysis:
Africa has substantially speed up its progress on water Initiative Clean Water and Sanitation: The initiative offers the infrastructure for communities to receive clean water. Boreholes have often gone into disrepair, forcing communities to travel considerable distances from town to obtain water or rely on dangerous water sources. A borehole can offer around one million gallons of clean drinking water per year, depending on the population of the neighbourhood.
Health and Wellbeing. In Uganda, ten restored boreholes serve 5,700 people, preventing 100 episodes of diarrhoea and six fatalities per year. In 2016, although 29% of people worldwide did not utilise safely managed drinking water services, the situation in Uganda is substantially worse, with 93% not using safely managed drinking water.
Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: To provide a long-term solution, locally relevant technology, such as Afridev hand pumps, is deployed and maintained by local mechanics taught under the scheme.
