Liberia is a country on the west African coast. The landscape of Liberia varies from flat and sandy coastal lowlands to undulating hills and dissected plateau further interior. The country is home to a lush rainforest with a diverse range of flora and wildlife. Liberia is Africa’s oldest nation and the only Black state that has never been colonised. It was formed on property obtained for freed slaves in the United States by the American Colonisation Society, which established a colony at Cape Mesurado in 1821. The territory was named Liberia in 1824.

Liberia was the first African republic to declare independence, and it is the continent’s first and oldest modern republic. It was one of two African countries, along with Ethiopia, to retain sovereignty during the Scramble for Africa. During World War II, Liberia backed the United States’ war effort against Germany, and as a result, the country received significant American investment in infrastructure, which aided its riches and development. Liberia was a founder member of the League of Nations, the United Nations, and the Organisation of African Unity, and President William Tubman pushed economic and political improvements that increased the country’s wealth and international image.

Languages

Liberia is a multilingual country that speaks more than 20 indigenous languages. The official language is English, whereas the vernacular lingua franca is Liberian Kreyol, which is primarily spoken as a second language. The native Niger-Congo languages are divided into four groups: Mande, Kru, Mel, and the divergent language Gola. Kpelle speakers constitute the largest single linguistic group.

Trade

The US dollar, which was once the sole legal money in Liberia, now circulates alongside the Liberian dollar, which is issued by the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL). Income, profit, property, domestic transaction, foreign trade, and maritime taxes all contribute to government revenue. Approximately one-third of economic development assistance has traditionally come from bilateral and multilateral sources. The CBL, the National Housing and Savings Bank, the Agricultural and Cooperative Development Bank, and the Liberian Bank for Development and Investment are among the government-sponsored banks. There are also private banks, insurance firms, and credit unions.
